A defense official has revealed that the MoD is actively looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in any cars.
Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.
He explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Defence Context
This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
This wider security situation highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all aspects of official operations, including transport usage to communication habits.
