Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in that campaign, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
